Bed Bugs do I or don’t I have them

I went to bed last night and when I got up this morning I have insect bites but I don’t see any insects, WHY??

To answer this, questions must be asked…

1. Has any person living in the household returned recently from a trip?

2. Do I have reddish, or brownish dots on the bedding?

3. What part of the body are the bites located? i.e.; torso, thigh(s), and/or upper arm(s).

4. Has any furniture been brought in to the home lately? i.e. couches, beds, or chairs.

5. Have I stayed in a hotel/motel in the last two weeks?

Kissing Bugs leave their mark

ADULT NYMP

Kissing Bugs also know as conenoses or Wallapai tigers, enter homes and feed on humans and pets, when bitten you may suffer an allergic reaction to the bites. This pest is most active at night, hiding during the day. They sense the presence of a blood meal by the carbon dioxide given off by their victims. If disturbed when feeding it will move to new feeding sites leaving several bites in close proximity leaving red raised welts. Because the humans usually sleep with their face uncovered at night, the bug often feeds on the face (hence “kissing bug”). To help prevent this pest home owners should reduce the presence of vegetation and wild vertebrate from areas around the home. Kissing bugs feed on small mammals often rodents. Keep Them Away

The four key factors to controlling pests

1. Don’t let them in…

Exclusion, seal exterior voids, don’t bring in items with them in it i.e. used items, if doing so always inspect the item for pests before item enters your structure.

2. Don’t give them a place to live…

Always rotate stock and stored items, keep build up to a minimum and clean, seal sheds, keep wood storage off ground

3. Don’t give them a food source…

Clean up spillage of food items, don’t leave dog or cat food out if pet is not being feed, (FYI flies and rats will be attracted dog feces, keep it pick up) birdseed is also an attractant.

4. Don’t give a water source…

This is hard to control over all, but know this if you can control any one of the other three “Don’ts” you will have a good handle on controlling pests.

Things That Go BUZZ

As spring approaches and the weather warms these BUZZING pests ( Honey Bees, Hornets, Wasps, Yellow Jackets) to name a few can become a stinging problem for children, pets and many people. If you are concerned about these pests, there are some things that may help to prevent them from becoming and immense bothersome problem, i.e. have small WASPS nests treated before their numbers grow large. Look for openings and voids on the exterior of you home/building that may look inviting to a HONEY BEE SWARM to set up a new hive, and seal them BEFORE they move in. Keeping pet food picked up and don’t leave foods outside for YELLOW JACKETS to be attracted too and feed on. Spiders the unfortunate misunderstood pest

This pest is beneficial and yet still makes us uncomfortable to have in our homes or places of business. The main reason spiders take up residence indoors is because a food source is present for it to feed on. If it is a webbing spider and the webbing is low, it’s food source is a growing insect. If the webbing is higher, it’s a flying insect food source. So if the food source is removed the spider usually will leave for greener pastures such as outdoors. That is NOT a miniature Spring Butterfly

Do you have unidentified insects flying (fluttering) in your kitchen or living room? Do you have cotton like material at ceiling areas and conners at the top of your walls? That cotton like material is not a Butterfly Cocoon, (chrysalis) it’s very likely a sign you may have a pantry pest infestation.

Food product pests, i.e. Indian Meal Moths infest dry foods such as cereals, grains, dry dog food, and even some spices. I have even found an infestation of the larvae feeding in a dried flower arrangement on a wall in a family home.

The first thing after finding that you have this issue is to examine all of your dry foods (again don’t forget to check the dry dog and cat foods). If the food packaging is unopened and is a bag type look for small holes. If the packaging is a box look at the opening on the sides and conners for larvae or webbing. All contaminated items must be discarded to the outside trash.

All areas the product was stored needs to be cleared of all spillage and cleaned, a clean damp cloth will do. The area should be treated with a residual, very low toxic, contact pesticide and dried before any food is returned to the area to ensure that no missed pest can re-infest your foods. Ants Just Don’t Show Up For Picnic Eats

As summer approaches, ant colonies expand and need additional food sources to feed their brood (young ants). They will do their best to find food and will move from the exterior to the interior areas of your home or business. Before they can find there way in, it’s best to reduce avenues of entry points into your structure, by sealing openings around pipes, door and window frames with a caulking compound for smaller openings. Cutting back foliage (tree branches, plants, and bushes) from contact with your structure. Remove yard debris to reduce nesting areas, such as plant trimmings and rubbish. Using a SYSTEMIC plant fertilizer to feed your bushes and shrubs will keep aphids from living and feeding on them. Ants protect the aphids from other insects and feed on the honeydew the aphids produce, adding a good quality cedar ground cover material around the base of the structure will serve as a deterrent from ants establishing nests in the area.
